I am sure that I am not the only one who is shocked and saddened by the news that Avusa is closing down Avocado magazine. Just yesterday I was speaking to the editor, Kerry Hayes, about a recipe in the magazine that wasn’t working out for me. She personally offered me two alternatives as well as offering to send me another decadent white chocolate and honeycomb dessert. Not many magazines or their editors would offer this personal hands on assistance. The Avocado magazine is my foodie inspiration and I rush off to buy it every month, eagerly scanning the pages for something new to cook or bake or for a new cocktail to share with friends at the weekend braai. My culinary prowess is largely due to Avocado.
Over the last three months, we have seen a change in the layout, cover and quality of the paper of the magazine. The editorial staff listened to their readers’ feedback and realised that we liked it exactly as it was and so in their most recent issue they announced that the magazine was to revert to a bi-monthly magazine of the sterling quality of the original magazine. Now this news. So sad.
Their delicious covers on the magazine (beguiling you with “come buy me”), the beautiful photos, the ease of reading one recipe per page with all the hints and tips given for ease of making the recipe work best for you, all this will be sorely missed and is not offered by any other food magazine in South Africa. Some of the comments on their Facebook page say it all:
Joy de Lange: No, I can’t believe it! It is really very sad news, Avocado is the first and only magazine I ever subscribed to… When will the last issue be?
Beulah Harris: This is just terrible news! Avocado magazine has been our favourite foodie mag for years. Very sad indeed.
Annie Fraser: Today is bitter sweet! it is very hard saying goodbye to an old friend! This time five years ago we sat and designed our very first issue of Avocado/Avokado magazine. Five years of delectable, scrumptious food, fun-filled shoots and many a late night working with a tight-knit, dedicated team sending the magazine to print… Today, we say so long and goodbye!!
Here is wishing all the Avocado team the best of luck going forward. May good fortune follow you, as you are an amazing crew with such creative talent.
