The March Lily, (also known as “Naked Ladies, due to their bare stems”) gets its name due to the fact that it normally flowers in the Western Cape during March, in some areas it could start flowering as early as the end of February and in extreme cases has been known to flower as late as April. Once the plant has finish flowering the leaves will die off and the bulb will remain dormant until the next year. The technical name is Amaryllis Belladonna, the plant grows from a bulb but can easily be propagated by seed.
The pale pink blossoms are exquisite and can be seen everywhere in the wild.
My March lilies did not flower this year. I have about 15 of them in the garden, and not one of them has bloomed yet. Can you perhaps give me a reason for this?
Thank you.
Hi Monty
I really can’t answer your question. Have they been growing in the same place for a long time, getting the same amount of water etc? I do know that they do not like to be over fertilised. I have been told that they can be forced to bloom by placing the bulbs in the fridge for a week or so and then re-planting at end Feb beginning of March. Hope this helps
