We received an email from Trevor Hardaker at 3.48pm today reporting a Southern Elephant seal had hauled itself onto Blouberg beach opposite Doodles Restaurant, in Table View.
I immediately hopped into my car as this was an opportunity not to be missed. The home of these great animals/mammals belong about 1600 kilometres further south from South Africa, namely Marion Island. A rare find on our shores.
On reaching the beach I met up with Bruce Dyer who had originally raised the alert to the seal being on the beach. He told us that the seal was a very young male which was in extremely good health. He was really lazy, scratching himself and throwing cool sand over his back. He moved from higher up the beach to lower down where the sand was cooler still.
Just have a look at these photos and tell me that he isn’t the cutest thing ever.
