Intaka Island (Intaka meaning bird in isiXhosa), is one of those best kept secrets that one discovers by accident. It is located within Century City in Cape Town, hidden among all the hi-rise buildings and mega shopping centre. It is a delightful place where you could disappear into.
We visited on the recommendation of someone we met whilst on one of our many travels in the surrounding areas of Cape Town. Intaka Island is a man made island surrounded by the many canals that take you around Century City. You can also take a boat ride through the canals which is very laid back and relaxing.
We climbed up to the lookout on the top of a small hill that oversees the whole island and it is beautiful, in fact a perfect place to take a picnic basket with a nice bottle of wine and to just sit and purvey the goings on, birds flying overhead and diving down into the heronry, Kingfishers fishing and coots chasing each other.
There are two heronry areas as well as many hides where you can sit and watch. We were lucky enough to see many chicks that were still being fed by their parents. There are Grey Heron, Cormorants, Ducks, Geese, Spoonbills, Coots, Kingfishers and Cape Darters. You need to spend a while to see all the action.
We enjoyed ourselves so much that we bought ourselves an annual entrance ticket, we will be back and often.
