I am sure that I am not the only one who is shocked and saddened by the news that Avusa is closing down Avocado magazine. Just yesterday I was speaking to the editor, Kerry Hayes, about a recipe in the magazine that wasn’t working out for me. She personally offered me two alternatives as well as offering to send me another decadent white chocolate and honeycomb dessert. Not many magazines or their editors would offer this personal hands on assistance. The Avocado magazine is my foodie inspiration and I rush off to buy it every month, eagerly scanning the pages for something new to cook or bake or for a new cocktail to share with friends at the weekend braai. My culinary prowess is largely due to Avocado.
Over the last three months, we have seen a change in the layout, cover and quality of the paper of the magazine. The editorial staff listened to their readers’ feedback and realised that we liked it exactly as it was and so in their most recent issue they announced that the magazine was to revert to a bi-monthly magazine of the sterling quality of the original magazine. Now this news. So sad.
Their delicious covers on the magazine (beguiling you with “come buy me”), the beautiful photos, the ease of reading one recipe per page with all the hints and tips given for ease of making the recipe work best for you, all this will be sorely missed and is not offered by any other food magazine in South Africa. Some of the comments on their Facebook page say it all:
Joy de Lange: No, I can’t believe it! It is really very sad news, Avocado is the first and only magazine I ever subscribed to… When will the last issue be?
Beulah Harris: This is just terrible news! Avocado magazine has been our favourite foodie mag for years. Very sad indeed.
Annie Fraser: Today is bitter sweet! it is very hard saying goodbye to an old friend! This time five years ago we sat and designed our very first issue of Avocado/Avokado magazine. Five years of delectable, scrumptious food, fun-filled shoots and many a late night working with a tight-knit, dedicated team sending the magazine to print… Today, we say so long and goodbye!!
Here is wishing all the Avocado team the best of luck going forward. May good fortune follow you, as you are an amazing crew with such creative talent.
Thank you for this wonderful post – it means so much to the whole team. We are terribly sad that Avo has reached the end of its journey through beautiful and delicious food with our readers. But the messages of support and encouragement have been amazing, and we are so grateful to each one of you for being a part of our Avo family over these past five years.
My goodness! I have been scanning the shelves every day scanning for my Avo! This should have been broadcast on national TV. I cannot see a future in cooking anymore.
I need my Avo, now!
To say I’m sad to hear about this is an understatement! I can’t believe it and was hoping that it’s not true. I tried my best to find Avocado’s christmas edition on the supermarkets shelves – to no avail. I just thought that I’ve missed it or that it was such a good mag that it was sold out. To come back to this news is terrible. I’ve been a faithful supporter since day one and have each and every one of my mags stacked up nicely in my kitchen cabinet. I’m really going to miss this magazine as I only buy three of them and Avo was defs first on my list. It’s a sad sad day in SA if this happens to quality magazine.
This is a very sad day. I am going to miss my avocado!!!!
Hi Christa, I miss the magazine already
I keep hoping that I had miss heard and still check out every bookshop, sweet store any where that sells magazines. WHY did they stop.
I miss my avocado!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
please bring it back
I am happy to pay more for it
Avo was the only magazine I ended up looking out for in Moorreesburg – Actually thought that our shops don’t stock it anymore & searched high & low for it in Cape Town – now I found out you are closed. This is extremely fucking sad. Like finding the perfect recipy only to found out one of the ingredients don’t exicst anymore!!!! I’m truley down in the dumps today! You had the best ideas from all the mag’s out there. Why stop?
I still can’t believe it. No more Avocado. I still look for it at the shops just in case. Why???
Please reconsider. I’m sure I speak for all who supported the mag that we would definitely pay more.
its really sad to hear, but why are they closing? are they bankcrupt? then we can raise a foundation and make sure they exist.Avo my favorite food mag since 2007.
It is sad, but I think their sales were dropping so the publishers decided not to carry on with the magazine.
